Antiques - Pewter & Other Metal Items
Antiques on the Square carries antique pewter from the 1700s and 1800s. Pewter is a very soft and easily moulded alloy whose main content is tin. The history of pewter tableware and serving items can be traced back as far as the 11th century. In spite of its history, very few pewter items made before the 1600s can be found today outside of museums. Antique pewter has a unique feel, weight, and patina. Antique pewter has a charm all its own and adds warmth and a sense of history to todays surroundings. Most pewter from the 1700s and 1800s available today was made in Europe. Although many antique pewter pieces can be identified by touch marks, just as many pieces can not be identified as to the manufacturer. Even if the manufacturer can not be identified, antique pewter is extremely collectible . Because of its low melting point, pewter was easily melted and remoulded over the years. Many pieces did not survive, were repaired, or were altered in design. The key to collecting antique pewter is to study pewter and become familiar with its look, feel, and makers. Because really great antique pewter pieces are becoming more and more rare, guidelines for pewter prices are really hard to find. This is one field where pricing is constantly changing because demand is constantly increasing.
