Description

Antique English Staffordshire drabware pitcher made by W. Ridgway & Co. This grand pitcher probably dates to the 1820s. It is highly decorated with relief moulded designs. The designs was probably a salute to Bacchus - the Greek & Roman god of wine and revelry. The decorations include 4 likenesses of Bacchus, swirls of grapevines and clusters of grapes. The handle is moulded in human form. It is topped with a pewter lid. There is a very old (pre 1900) repair to the handle that actually adds to the antique charm of this pitcher. Repairs of this type were done in the 1800s (reportedly by gypsies). Also, repairs of this type were done to preserve articles of considerable value. This pitcher measures approx. 9" tall and 7 1/2" wide at the widest point including the handle. This is a rare and lovely pitcher.
