Originally chamber pots were meant for personal sanitary use in private chambers. Thus the name chamber pot. Today, we think of them in completely different terms. Today, antique chamber pots are highly sought after. They were produced to match many many china patterns and consequently, many are quite beautiful and decorative.
Now, instead of their original use, very often they are displayed in collections, as single conversation pieces, or sadly, as plant pots. The ones found today are usually from the mid to late 1800s and they are usually of the same general shape with a single or double handle. Thankfully, many have survived because (by necessity and the nature of their intended use) they were usually quite sturdy.
Antiques On The Square has been fortunate to find many beautiful chamber pots in England. Some of which were be well know Staffordshire potters.
